How to measure snowboard boots correctly?

Snowboard boots are the most important piece of equipment for a snowboarder. You might ask, "What about the board?!" The truth is, even the best board for your riding style and skill level will be useless if the boots are too big, too small, or the wrong width.

In today's article, we'll tell you how to properly measure your snowboard boots to enjoy your ride and, more importantly, ensure your safety.

So what do you need to measure your snowboard boots correctly? First, you need to know your foot size. To do this:
  • Take a piece of paper
  • Stand on it with both feet - this is important because our feet are not perfectly the same length
  • Bend your knees as if you were doing a plank
  • Trace your feet, trying to keep the pencil at a right angle to the floor.
Once we have the outline of our feet, we connect the two furthest points with a line. Typically, this is the center of the heel and one of the toes. Now all we need to do is measure the resulting line and add about 0.5cm of allowance. And that's the length we want for our snowboard boots.

However, it's not recommended to buy shoes based solely on this. Even if you plan to buy online, it's a good idea to visit a sports store and try on a few pairs. This will allow you to determine whether you need wider shoes or whether standard ones will suffice, and determine which model is most comfortable for you. A few minutes in the shoes will allow you to determine whether they don't rub, whether they properly support your foot, and whether they're simply comfortable.

Above all, however, you should focus on size. A common mistake is buying boots that are too large. This happens because, when standing upright, snowboard boots in the right size will slightly press against your toes. So, remember that in these boots, you'll be leaning forward and with bent knees! In this position, the foot gently retracts, and the boot suddenly goes from being too small to just right. Remember, too, that good snowboard boots should secure the heel. You don't have to worry about the insoles breaking in and the boot becoming too loose, as most models now come standard with thermodynamic insoles that mold to the foot.

Another factor that complicates buying the right size shoes is trying them on only with a thick sock. These days, most riding socks are thermal and no thicker than the ones we wear every day. This method will also contribute to choosing the wrong size.

Buying boots that are too big will not only spoil the fun, but can be downright dangerous. Boots should move with your foot to steer your board. Boots that are too big will move your foot, but both the boots and the board will stay put, which is why they're said to be much less responsive. This can be dangerous if you try to turn in front of an obstacle and the board doesn't react quickly enough. The ride itself will also be much more demanding and tiring, effectively taking away from the fun of the slopes.

Don't overdo it in the other direction either. Shoes that are too small can lead to chafing, restrict circulation, and turn your ride from great fun into a nightmare.

With these guidelines in mind, you'll surely choose the right shoes for yourself, which isn't an easy decision. Good luck!
