How to choose a snowboard for children?
Is your little one old enough to try the slopes together? Great! They say the best time to start learning to snowboard is at age 5 or 6. Older children, ages 10 and up, often pick up the snowboarding bug themselves and want to try it out. It's a great idea for a family outing, strengthening family bonds, or for a fun winter camp experience for your child. But how do you choose the right board? The choice is yours. Check out a few important facts.
A child's snowboard should be soft and agile. It's definitely an all-mountain type with plenty of flex, allowing for easy turns and forgiving of beginner mistakes. A safe snowboard for children should also be light enough. Boards with a foam core are available, making them lightweight and safe. This is definitely a good choice for a toddler, but also for a slightly older child taking their first descents.
Now comes the most pressing question: How to choose the right size? Choosing the right board length isn't much different from choosing a snowboard for an adult. The board should reach a child's chin. However, children's boot sizes vary. Therefore, check whether a chin-length snowboard isn't too narrow for their boot size. There's also a formula that allows you to calculate the optimal length: subtract 20 from the child's weight and add 100. Easy to remember? If your son or daughter weighs 30 kg, there's a good chance a 110 cm board will be the right choice.
After choosing a board, remember to buy protective gear, strong, waterproof pants and a jacket, and, above all, good shoes, which are crucial for riding comfort. Now all that's left is to support your child through the difficult but rewarding process of learning to ride. We're keeping our fingers crossed!
