How to choose the right snowboard size?

Snowboarding comfort is incredibly important. Without it, the enjoyment won't be the same, and the snowboarder might even become dissatisfied with this beautiful sport. That's why it's so important to choose the right equipment for your needs, requirements, and, in the case of snowboarding, also... your height! In this article, you'll learn a few rules for choosing the perfect board size based on your height and weight. Fortunately, it's not that difficult. Let's get started!

Measuring a board is a relatively straightforward process. If you want to be meticulous, you can use charts provided by individual equipment manufacturers. They will help you determine the ideal board length for people in your height range. However, there's an even easier way. When searching for your dream board, stand up straight, place your snowboard in front of you, and determine your "height difference." The board should reach approximately to your chin. If you're around 180 cm tall, your board length will likely range from 157 to 160 cm.

Height is height, but what about weight? The more you weigh, the longer your board should be. Every extra 10 kg adds approximately 5 cm to the length. Models will likely vary depending on gender. A qualified equipment store employee will be happy to help with more unconventional choices. Now, for example, to clarify: a women's board for a height of 160-165 cm and a weight of 40-50 kg is 143-145 cm, while a women's board for the same height and a weight of 60-70 kg is 147-150 cm. With this knowledge, it will be easier to buy a good snowboard on your own, but also to negotiate with the store staff.

There are a multitude of board sizes. The next size is three to five centimeters larger than the previous one. The width of the board also plays a role. The "W" in the snowboard size stands for "Wide," meaning a widened board suitable for larger boot sizes. If your feet are larger than a size 45, choose this board.

The standard "chin-length" rule isn't impossible to break, of course. Riders who enjoy snowparks often opt for a slightly shorter board, which is easier to maneuver. Fans of off-piste, or freeriding, often choose a longer board, which is harder to dig into powder. As you can see, there are plenty of options, depending on your snowboarding knowledge and skill level. It's worth testing out different rental boards on the slopes. Find out which one is best for you.
