From Prototype to Icon: The Burton Custom Turns 30

Sometimes the greatest successes come from the most unexpected places, and such is the case with the Burton Custom. What started as a last-minute prototype squeezed into a Burton sales meeting in the early 90s, would eventually become a snowboarding icon, and it just turned 30. But the Burton Custom is so much more than just a snowboard; it’s a symbol of commitment to progress across materials, construction techniques, art, and sport. Now, it's time to celebrate the best-selling snowboard of all time, and the crown jewel of Burton’s board collection. Join us for a thirty-year trip down memory lane to find out how the Custom was born and evolved into the icon it is today.


The Birth of a Legend: Development and Launch, 1994–1996

Officially unveiled at the Burton sales meeting in January 1995 and first launched the following winter (1995/96 season), the Burton Custom was born out of a high demand for a freestyle twin and made possible by Burton’s innovations in snowboard materials and construction methods.
Former Burton engineer and Product Manager Paul Fidrych was one of the key people at the time, sitting at the intersection of snowboard design, material development, and R&D. He had a close, inside look into what was needed. Paul recounted, “The goal was to create the most versatile all-around snowboard that was light so you could spin it, light enough to float in powder, but also so you could carve it and hold an edge in all conditions.” The problem, however, wasn't the vision, it was how to get there.


In short, Burton’s mid-90s freestyle offering was missing a premium, performance-oriented model, and the biggest impediment was materials. To build the Custom required, dare we say, a revolution. In the end, the Burton family, a united group of board builders, introduced three major innovations to achieve this: fiberglass, wood cores, and snowboard construction.
Triax fiberglass was a staple in Burton’s alpine boards, but to get the right edge hold and torsional stiffness for freestyle boards, Dave Dodge and the Burton R&D team had to develop a new “Lite Triax” lay-up. This lighter fiberglass gave powerful edge hold, but in the overall package, was forgiving enough to spin and press. On the core side, Burton broke away from heavy, glue-laminated Swiss veneers and pioneered the use of locally sourced aspen wood laminates (A-Core), and soon after, the Aspen/Balsa SuperFly™ core, which dropped board weight by over a pound. In construction, new ABS and TPU sidewall blends solved delamination issues, while wet laminate production was refined to cut excess epoxy and further lighten the ride.

Prototyping was equally critical. In August 1994, John “JG” Gerndt and team rider Dave Downing headed to Wanaka, New Zealand, with 14 prototypes in tow. Downing spent two weeks testing each board on powder, groomers, race courses, and side-hits, while JG, who was benched with a broken leg, recorded every detail. “Going from the Air series to the Custom was like going from a regular board to a pro model. Much lighter, much higher level,” Downing recalled.

Riders like Dave Downing and Joe Curtes quickly championed the prototypes, driven by the desire for a higher-end board they could genuinely stand behind. While the Custom initially began as an evolution of the aging Air line, it wasn't until later that it solidified its identity, with early topsheets emblazoned with “Custom Air,” which was swiftly shortened to “Custom.” The name stuck, the design thrilled, and a legend was born.

 

Lighter, Faster, Stronger, and Here to Stay: The Late 1990s Custom

The period leading up to the Custom’s debut in the winter of 1995/1996 featured an accelerated development cycle, but it didn’t hurt, quite the contrary. The Custom was an immediate, spectacular success. Paul recalled, “When the Custom hit retail, sales just went through the roof.” The board was an instant hit, filling a void riders and retailers alike had been waiting for.

Building on this momentum, Burton engineers continued pushing the envelope in cores. In 1998, the original AB8/SuperFly core evolved into the SuperFly II, introduced in both Burton’s Pro Decks and the Custom. This replaced more aspen laminates with lighter balsa, allowing for weight reductions without sacrificing strength.

By this time, the Custom was no longer just Dave Downing and Joe Curtes’ board. Riders like Aleksi Vanninen, Jason Brown, Ryan Williams, Brad Scheuffele, Bryan Iguchi, and Victoria Jealouse were all riding it, further proving that Burton’s refinements worked on snow.

With refinements such as these, the Custom quickly cemented its place as the most versatile, performance-oriented model in the Burton line: light, durable, and powerful.


Trickle-Down Technology: The Custom in the 2000s

If the Custom’s first decade was a period of breakthroughs, the 2000s saw a shift. Now firmly established as Burton’s flagship model, the Custom became the ultimate beneficiary of the company’s most exclusive innovations. Technology that debuted in experimental or ultra-high-end models—boards like the Vapor, Pro Decks, or FL Project—soon found its way into the Custom, transforming it into a showcase of Burton’s best ideas refined for everyday riders.

This pattern began in 2000 with Engineered Grain Direction (EGD). Introduced in the FL Core, EGD rotated the wood grain 90 degrees underfoot to improve edge hold, durability, and responsiveness. By the early 2000s, it began to be integrated into the Custom, giving riders a more precise and controlled experience. Soon after, Carbon I-Beam technology followed the same path—first appearing on FL Project boards, then incorporated into the Custom to add longitudinal pop and stiffness while retaining torsional flex for smoother turns.

In 2004, Burton doubled down on performance with the introduction of the Custom X, a stiffer, more aggressive board designed for snowboarders demanding maximum response. The Custom X became a testing ground for new materials and layups, many of which trickled back into the standard Custom. By 2006, the Custom celebrated its 10th anniversary, featuring a collage of graphics nodding to icons like Downing and Curtes, all while absorbing Burton's best technical and engineering innovations.

2007 brought two more steps forward: Vaporskin construction, which debuted on the Vapor snowboard, which when applied to the Custom X, allowed for half-a-pound of weight reduction; and the addition of Burton’s WFO Sintered Base to the Custom, enhancing speed and durability. A year later, Custom and Custom X Wide options appeared, expanding the family to fit riders of all shapes and sizes.

By the end of the 2000s, the Custom was no longer just a single board but a platform. Between the Custom, Custom X, and new Wide options, it offered something for almost everyone and every style of shred, all while carrying Burton's highest-end material innovations. Graphics and cultural energy also soared, with snowboarders like Heikki Sorsa, Mads Jonsson, and Mason Aguirre pushing the board into new territory. During this period, Jonsson set a still-unbeaten world record for the largest gap trick—187 feet—on a Custom, another moment that further cemented the Custom’s place in snowboarding history. 


Profiles and Performance Tweaks: The 2010s

The 2010s for the Custom were a period of refinement and diversification, allowing riders to fine-tune their experience while retaining the core characteristics that established the brand in 1996.

In 2010, Burton introduced Squeezebox technology, a strategic core profiling (varied thickness zones) that enhanced flex responsiveness underfoot and stability between the bindings. It was added to the Custom. The same year saw the Custom V-Rocker, and in 2011, the Custom Flying V, blending rocker between and outside the feet with camber underfoot for precise edge control, added pop, and powerful turns. These new profiles, alongside the Custom’s traditional camber, gave riders added options within the same series; a whole quiver of Custom models to choose from.

During these same years, the Custom brand also branched out in new directions. Restricted Custom boards, launched between 2012-2014, featured limited-edition graphics—cocktails, the Muppets, and even swimsuit pin-ups—sold exclusively to core shops. These boards never appeared in regular Burton catalogs, so finding one and adding it to your collection was an achievement that required a bit of luck. The Custom Twin (a true twin, non-directional) made a brief appearance, paving the way for what would later become the Blossom. Youth riders had their own Custom Smalls boards, and there was even a Custom Splitboard, though details on that particular model are scarce.

Culturally, the Custom remained in the spotlight. And in 2016, for the Custom’s 20th anniversary, retro boot covers were released that nodded to its pedigree, reminding everyone that despite its age, the Custom was still as relevant (and badass) as ever.

All Grown Up: The Custom in the 2020s

If the 2020s have shown us anything, it's that persistence doesn't mean standing still. While the Custom's dimensions remained unchanged, Burton continued to refine materials and manufacturing with an eye toward the future. Since 2018, the board has featured rounded tips, but beneath that subtle change, the DNA remains intact; same profile, same lengths, same ride.

During this time, sustainability has also played an increasingly important role for Burton. In snowboards, this comes in the form of FSC-certified wood cores, Super Sap resin, and other intentionally chosen materials. Naturally, these changes were incorporated into the Custom, aligning it with Burton’s broader mission to reduce our environmental impact without compromising performance.

On snow, the Custom has proven as competitive as ever. At the 2023 X-Games, Ayumu Hirano landed the world’s first triple cork in competition on a Custom, making history in the halfpipe. In 2021, Mikkel Bang won Natural Selection Alaska on a Custom, showing that even in the most progressive freeride competition in the world, this thirty-year-old board still holds its own.

2025 marks the Custom’s thirtieth anniversary by nodding to its past. Ben Ferguson’s Custom Custom design highlights the board’s timeless versatility, while paying homage to original design roots, like the Pegasus, much like the first Custom back in 1995. How else will this icon be interpreted in the future? Only time will tell.

After three decades, it evolves while remaining precisely what it was always intended to be: the most versatile snowboard ever made.

Coming Full Circle: 2025 

Looking back at the past three decades, a lot has changed—materials, construction methods, and graphics—but the Custom has kept its original shape and all-around use. The board you ride today is essentially the same board you rode in the winter of ‘95/’96. It’s pretty incredible that the creators of the original got it right, and there was no need for any fundamental changes. As Dave Downing put it, “The math of that board is exactly the same as it was…the shape hasn't changed in 30 years.”

What has changed are the innovations that started with the Custom in ‘96—lighter cores, new glass lay-ups, sidewalls, bases—which raised the bar. That’s the legacy of the Custom. It's a board that not only shaped Burton’s line but helped shape snowboarding itself.
